Banish Back Pain
Anyone who’s suffered from a bad back knows just how painful and debilitating it can be. Back pain is one of the most common ailments we’re likely to encounter, with one study predicting that almost half of all adults in the UK can expect to suffer from it at some point in their lives.
How it happens
The most common cause of lower back pain is a torn or pulled muscle or ligament. These tears can develop over time, brought on by repetitive movements or poor posture; or they might happen suddenly after lifting a heavy object or picking up a sports injury. Whatever the cause, the pain can be severe and long-lasting.
Road to recovery
Seeking help from your GP should be your first port of call to rule out anything that might require specialist medical help. Most niggling back pain will get better on its own, but it can sometimes take many months.
Back care specialists agree that sleeping on the wrong mattress can cause or worsen back pain. The Sleep Council advises renewing your mattress every 7 years.
Christian Bates, a leading osteopath and founder of the Perrymount Clinic in Haywards Heath, says: “I see many patients who complain of neck or back pain in the morning which eases during the day. This can be down to various conditions, but it’s not at all unusual to find that the problem is an unsuitable mattress.
“Whether the mattress is too old and has lost its support, or it was too firm or too soft when originally bought, this is an issue that’s always worth considering.”
Which mattress should I choose?
A good mattress allows the structures of the spine to rest and rejuvenate throughout the night. Generally speaking, choosing a firm mattress will provide both comfort and support, reducing pain and even stopping it from occurring in the first place.
“Everyone is different and there’s definitely no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to mattresses,” adds Christian Bates. “Choose your mattress carefully and seek expert guidance from bed specialists.”
