When did you last change your pillows?

Most of us are aware of the advice that a mattress should be changed roughly every eight years. What we sometimes forget, however, is that pillows need changing too – and far more regularly than a mattress. When did you last change your pillows? The Sleep Council, a British-based advisory organisation that promotes the importance of healthy sleep, says that two to three years is the average life span of a good pillow.

So why do pillows need replacing at all?
Can’t we just stick them in the washing machine every now and again, until they start to fall apart (even if that takes a decade or longer)? There are two main reasons for replacement - hygiene and neck health.

Beware the bugs

If you’re squeamish, look away now . . . The Sleep Council warns that an old, unwashed pillow could contain as much as 10% of its weight in skin scale, mould, dead and living dust mites and their
allergen-laden droppings. Dust, bugs and their faeces can trigger allergies, acne and other skin problems. To prevent this from happening, wash your pillows every three to six months – although be careful to check the label for washing instructions, as not all pillows are suitable for the washing machine. Even with regular washing, bacteria can build up, so remember to replace pillows every two to three years.

Support your spine

The spine contains 33 vertebrae, and seven of these are in the neck. It’s vital to offer just the right amount of support at night, to ensure you don’t wake with headaches or neck pain – or suffer from
daytime back pain that’s linked to poor posture at night. People’s preferences vary of course, with some choosing just one pillow and others swearing by two. But two very full pillows will almost certainly cause the spine to curve upwards, while a single one that’s too thin will let the head flop down.
The Sleep Council advises that the head and spine should be in alignment while sleeping, as they are when we sit or stand.
