How often should you change your mattress?
The question of how often you should change your mattress is often debated – and a common query from our customers.
The answer is not clear cut, however, all mattresses are different and deteriorate at different rates, depending on how often they are used.
While there is no real use-by date for mattresses, there are a number of tell-tale signs that will indicate when it could do with being changed.
Even if a mattress still looks ok on the surface, it could be a completely different story underneath the padding. And it may not be the mattress’ age or condition that could necessitate an upgrade.
When to consider a change.
A change in your lifestyle, such as getting married or buying a new home, or your body – losing or gaining weight – can trigger the need for a new mattress.
Other pointers to consider include:
• Waking up with stiffness and/or aches and pains – if the first few minutes of your morning are spent nursing soreness and stiffness it could be down to your mattress. As a mattress gets older the support it provides deteriorates, leaving you with aches and pains.
• Your sleep has got worse over the last year – if the quality of your shuteye has dipped over the last 12 months, your mattress could be to blame. An uncomfortable, older mattress can mean poor sleep.
• Visible wear and tear – if your mattress is sagging, lumpy, ripped or torn it’s time to say goodbye as it won’t be giving you the support you need.
• You sleep better in a hotel – did you sleep particularly well on your last holiday or weekend away but can’t replicate the same quality shuteye at home? This may well be because your mattress is past its best and needs to be retired.
If you’re not experiencing any of the above, but can’t remember when you bought your mattress, an upgrade may still be needed. The National Bed Federation advises people to consider changing their mattress if it’s more than seven years old.
