Meet our leadership team…

John & Sandra Pickering

My name is John, and together with my wife Sandra, we are the founders of Sussex Beds.

In December 1981, we opened the doors to our first shop in Hastings. Working alongside my sister and friends, the store was an instant success. Our purpose was clear: to improve the quality of sleep by providing quality products with exceptional
service at the best possible prices.

Family remains at the heart of the business, and I am so proud and humbled that my children and now grandchildren continue to successfully grow the business, staying true to our original purpose and values.

Today, Sandra and I are happily retired, though still very much connected—just watching more from afar. I often reflect on those fun start-up days and miss the sales floor dearly.

I remain always grateful for all those who have worked tirelessly to build the business over these many years, and deeply thankful to all the customers who have supported us and continue to support us today.

Steve Pickering

Hello, I am Steve, CEO of Sussex Beds.

If you know me, you’ll know I am not your usual CEO—some would say even a little unorthodox. I don’t do suits, don’t do ties, and my preferred footwear is a pair of Vans.

Having sat in the CEO seat since 2014, I am proud to have worked with my family to grow our business successfully and award-winningly across 3 counties in the south of England, helping many thousands of people gain the benefit of a quality night’s sleep in the process.

In my free time, you’ll find me occasionally treading the boards in local theatres and I’m proud to co-produce the annual Hastings Gang Show, leading over 100 young people to perform in this local spectacle.

Fun fact: our family business was founded by my parents and spans 3 generations, all as passionate and obsessed about beds and sleep as each other. I work with my brother, sister, cousin, wife and both children… the quarterly performance review with my wife is always interesting!

Matthew Pickering

Hi, I’m Matt, CAO (Chief Administrative Officer) of Sussex Beds. I oversee both the finance and IT departments of the company. I have been in charge of finance since 1998 and recently added IT to my responsibilities after overseeing “Project Mayhem”, the upgrading of all our old legacy IT systems to a single ERP!

I started working full time for Sussex Beds in 1993, initially as a sales advisor in our Haywards Heath store before becoming the store manager there, before taking up my current finance role.

In my free time, I like to exercise, either at the gym or running. I enjoy walking with my boxer dog, Bohdi and love watching her just run and play. I am heavily into most things Sci fi, either on tv, reading, computer games or playing tabletop games.

My favourite memory from working at Sussex Beds would be some of the games we used to invent to entertain ourselves while working, either shove 2p at Haywards Heath or bed nob bowles at Bexhill.

 John Rayment

I started my Sussex Beds career way back in 1989, when my uncle John offered me a job straight from leaving school at 16. I have had many job roles over the years, but started on the sales floor, before taking over running the warehouse in 1999.

In 2010 I proudly became a director, and 15 years on from there I love working with my family running our business. My latest role as head of operations is looking at all operational costs of running our business and of course finding and opening new stores.

In my spare time I love running, PT sessions at the gym, my annual trip to the Le Mans 24 race and going to concerts, where my favourite type of music is dance music. One of my fun memories is back in the 1990’s we had a shop in Eastbourne next to a nightclub, and we would often have a night out and then have a sleepover in the store to save getting home late at night…fun times!

Suzanne Skinner
Im Sue and I have worked for the Sussex Beds family for 30 years. Came straight from school into the shops selling to customers in Bexhill. I have held various job titles within Sussex Beds, and now I oversee all product-related matters within the company. Sorting, pricing and sourcing products that are on the shop floors.
In my free time I love horse riding! I’m a crazy horse woman. I have two Horses, Daffodil and Duke. I ride English (dressage and Jumping) with Daffodil and then Western riding with Duke, which is, if you have watched Yellowstone, that is what I do. I spend all of my spare time with them!
A crazy bed fact!
I can’t help but think about all the sweat and dead skin that soaks into a mattress every night. It especially hits me in hotel rooms — and honestly, it makes my skin crawl!

Did you know that the average person sweats about 200 ml to 500 ml (around 6.8 to 17 oz) per night.

That humans shed around 30,000 to 40,000 dead skin cells per minute. Plus in a year, a mattress can accumulate over a litre of sweatpounds of dead skin, and attract tens of thousands of dust mites (which feed on the skin cells).

Josh Pickering
I’m Josh, Sales Director & one of the 3rd generation in our family business alongside my sister, Grace. I’m part of our leadership team and am the head of all things sales within the business. I work alongside our Regional Managers, Team Trainer & Ecommerce Manager to make sure our customer experience is the very best when looking for their new bed!

Beds are in our blood really, so officially I’ve worked in the business over 10 years now, but in reality it’s from birth!

I’ve always been obsessed with football, whether it’s playing for my local side Westfield, or watching the best team in north london, Arsenal. I’m also big into fitness, so love running… but also balance that with top food & drink when out and about.
My favourite memory having worked here over the last 10 years would have to be opening stores. So much hard work, but fun & exciting to see what may come of the new store and new team members we take on!

Grace Pickering

Hi, I’m Grace, and I’ve been part of the Sussex Beds family since 2019. I started as a salesperson, then became a Store Leader before moving into the office as an Administrator.

I’m now the Merchandising & Display Leader, which is a great fit for me as I love being creative and getting involved in how our stores look and feel. One of my favourite memories has to be the charity bed push — we all turned up in our Sussex Beds merch, full of energy and team spirit. It was a hard day, but such a fun and rewarding one!

Outside of work, I love spending time with my family and friends, being with my dog Lola, and catching up on Formula 1. I try to enjoy the little things in life and never take anything for granted.

Lynn Riggs
My name is Lynn, and I’m the youngest sister of John Pickering, the founder of Sussex Beds. I started with the company in 1990 as a bed specialist at our Hastings store, working alongside my sister Wendy. Currently, I manage the Bexhill store with Julie.
With 35 years of experience in the business, I am passionate about providing a personalised service and sharing my knowledge with our customers.
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my four grandchildren, who bring a lot of joy to my life. I also love taking my two French Bulldogs, Sid and Mabel, for walks in the local woodlands and along the beach.
This year, my husband Kevin and I are looking forward to exploring the countryside in our motorhome and creating some special memories.

Julie Rayment
I’m Julie and have been married to John for nearly 26 years. In 2019 after too many years working with children I decided to join the family in the business. After initial training in both Bexhill and Uckfield I settled in working full time in Bexhill alongside Lynn. I pride myself on my customer service and love building rapport with customers.
I am also part of our Product and Development Committee helping out Sue and Grace with various tasks relating to that side of the business, and this involves the opportunity to go looking for new products for the shop floors.
I have too many favourite memories to choose howver most of them involve absolute belly laughs with my partner in crime Lynn. On a more serious note, coming together as a family to keep the business running during Covid.
My favourite things to do outside of work include walking my 2 Frenchies (photo needs updating to include my little Looney Luna), spending time with my friends and family, and my other love exercising with my personal trainer.
Im looking forward to the birth of my 1st grandchild later on in 2025!
