Why does January always feel like the longest month of the year?
Some say it’s because you may be waiting for payday, and some think it is because the holiday month of December can be so busy that when January is quieter it seems to last longer…
January is known for its darker nights, days and bad weather! We all know the lack of daylight can affect our sleeping patterns. When it’s dark during the day you tend to feel sleepy which can sometimes lead to struggling to sleep at night. We have some tips to help you sleep better this January!
Tip 1
Get sufficient light in the morning
When you wake up open your curtains and try to have breakfast by a sunlit window! This allows your melatonin to keep at a normal level, not getting enough sunlight means we produce too much melatonin and can make us sleepy during the day.
Tip 2
Keep on exercising
We all know exercising in the dark and cold can be a struggle but regular exercise strengths your cardiac rhythms and in turn improves your quality of sleep.
Tip 3
Stay cool but not cold
We all love to turn the heating up on cold and dreary days but for sleep, it’s best to keep the thermostat between 16 & 20 degrees.
Tip 4
Try not to nap after 3pm
Falling asleep too close to the evening can affect the sleep you get that night. Which can actually make you more tired.
Tip 5
Wind down before bed
Why not dim the lights and read a book? This is a relaxation technique bound to help you fall asleep!
Tip 6
Keep a regular sleep schedule
Going to sleep at a regular and consistent time will help you create a routine and your body will learn when it’s time to wind down therefore it should make it easier to fall asleep.
Tip 7
Stay Warm at Night
In the winter it is recommended that to be comfortable all night you should invest in a 10.5 tog or a 13.5 tog duvet! Browse our range of duvets here!
