9 Tips to make your Bedroom feel cosier for Autumn

As the evenings get darker and the temperature starts to drop, there’s nothing better than coming home to a bedroom that feels warm, cosy and inviting.

Autumn is the perfect time to give your bedroom a little refresh. You don’t need to completely redecorate or spend a fortune either — a few simple changes to your bedding, lighting, colours and textures can make a huge difference.

Here are some of our favourite ways to make your bedroom feel cosier this autumn.

1. Layer up your bedding

One of the easiest ways to give your bedroom that cosy autumn feeling is to add more layers to your bed.

Swap lightweight summer bedding for a warmer duvet and add a few extra layers such as a quilt, throw or blanket. Not only will this keep you warmer on chilly evenings, but it also makes your bed look much more inviting.

Try layering different textures rather than simply adding more of the same. A soft quilted bedspread paired with a knitted or woollen throw can instantly make your bed feel more luxurious.

And don’t forget your pillows. Mixing larger pillows with smaller cushions can create that comfortable, layered look you often see in beautiful hotel bedrooms.

Tip: Keep your bedding comfortable and breathable. Natural materials such as cotton and wool can help regulate temperature while you sleep, making them a great choice as the seasons change.

2. Bring warmer colours into your bedroom

You don’t need to reach for bright orange to make your bedroom feel autumnal.

Instead, introduce warmer, earthy tones through smaller details.

Think:

  • Warm beige
  • Cream
  • Terracotta
  • Rust
  • Deep green
  • Warm brown
  • Burgundy
  • Mustard

You could introduce these colours through your bedding, cushions, throws, curtains or even a simple piece of artwork.

If your bedroom is decorated in neutral tones, this can be particularly effective. Rather than changing the whole room, add a few autumnal accessories to create a warmer atmosphere.

3. Make lighting softer

As the days get shorter, lighting becomes even more important.

Bright overhead lighting can make a bedroom feel quite stark, whereas softer, layered lighting can instantly make it feel more relaxing.

Try using bedside lamps instead of your main light in the evening. Warm-toned bulbs can also create a softer, more inviting atmosphere.

Candles and LED candles can add another layer of warmth — just remember to never leave real candles unattended.

The goal is to create a bedroom that makes you want to switch off, relax and get ready for bed.

4. Add plenty of texture

Cosiness isn’t just about colour — texture makes a huge difference too.

Think about how different materials feel when you touch them and combine a few throughout the room.

Try adding:

  • Chunky knitted throws
  • Soft cushions
  • Woollen blankets
  • Textured rugs
  • Quilted bedding
  • Linen or cotton fabrics
  • Upholstered furniture

A mixture of textures makes a room feel much warmer and more interesting.

And, of course, your bed is the biggest piece of furniture in the room, so introducing texture through an upholstered bed frame can completely change the feel of your bedroom.

5. Create a cosy corner

If you have the space, create a little area dedicated to relaxing.

It could be a comfortable armchair in the corner of your bedroom, a small reading chair next to a window or even a bench at the end of your bed.

Add a soft throw and a cushion and you’ve got the perfect place to sit with a book before bed.

It also gives your bedroom another purpose beyond simply sleeping — somewhere to slow down at the end of the day.

6. Bring a little bit of nature inside

Autumn is all about the outdoors, so bringing natural elements into your bedroom can help create a warm and calming atmosphere.

Try adding:

  • Dried flowers
  • Branches or foliage
  • Wooden accessories
  • Woven baskets
  • Natural fabrics
  • Houseplants

Natural materials can work particularly well with neutral and earthy colour schemes, creating a relaxed bedroom that feels connected to the outdoors.

7. Give your bedroom a proper declutter

Sometimes the easiest way to make a bedroom feel cosier is simply to remove some of the clutter.

A bedroom filled with clothes, paperwork and random belongings doesn’t exactly encourage relaxation.

Take some time to clear bedside tables, organise your wardrobe and put away anything that doesn’t need to be in the bedroom.

You don’t need a completely minimalist room — the aim is simply to create a space that feels calm rather than chaotic.

8. Give your bed some attention

Your bed is the centrepiece of your bedroom, so if you’re looking to create a cosier space, it’s a good place to start.

If your mattress is uncomfortable, your pillows are past their best or your bed frame no longer suits your room, even the cosiest accessories won’t completely transform the experience.

Autumn can be a great time to think about whether your bed is still giving you the comfort and support you need.

If you’re waking up feeling uncomfortable, regularly tossing and turning or simply not getting the quality of sleep you used to, it could be time for an upgrade.

9. Don’t forget the finishing touches

It’s often the little things that make a bedroom feel like somewhere you actually want to spend time.

Try adding a few personal touches such as:

  • Your favourite books
  • Family photographs
  • A soft bedside rug
  • Your favourite autumn scent
  • A cosy throw
  • Fresh or dried flowers
  • A basket for blankets

You don’t need to follow a particular interior design trend. Your bedroom should feel like your space.

Ready for a cosier bedroom?

You don’t need to completely redesign your bedroom for autumn. Start with your bed, introduce some warmer colours, add plenty of texture and soften your lighting.

A few small changes can turn your bedroom into a warm, comfortable space that feels perfect for those darker autumn evenings.

And if your bed is the one thing that doesn’t feel quite as cosy as it should, Sussex Beds can help you find the perfect combination of mattress, bed and bedroom furniture.
