How To Choose The Right Mattress – Our Top Tips
It is not easy knowing how to choose the right mattress. At Sussex Beds, we’re on a mission to make our customers feel wonderful by matching them with the right bed.
And the most important element of getting the best bed is finding the perfect mattress. The average person spends 125 days of the year sleeping – that’s a long time spent in one place, so it’s vital your mattress is giving you the proper support for all those hours.
As true bed experts, with more than 40 years of experience. We pride ourselves on the wealth of knowledge that we happily share with our customers. Helping to ensure they get a great night’s sleep.
Here, we run down our top tips on choosing the right mattress to get you started on the road to relaxation and perfect shut-eye:
Spot the signs.
A good quality mattress will last years but will eventually need replacing – and there are some tell-tell signs that can signal when that time has come. If it has become lumpy, misshapen, worn or torn then it’s time to say goodbye. If you’re waking up with an achy back or neck this could be a sign it’s not supporting you as well as it should, so make plans to replace it. Lifestyle changes could also necessitate a new mattress – if you’re now sharing your bed with your significant other or have lost or gained weight for example.
Know your mattress material.
Under their quilted topcoats, mattresses can vary massively in terms of support and filling. Having an understanding of these different variations can help when it comes to finding your perfect bedfellow. Mattresses can be sprung, or non-sprung with the former fitted with springs and stuffed with materials such as cotton, wool, foam and hair, while the latter is filled with materials such as gel and water to provide their support. Among our range of traditional pocket sprung mattresses are our luxury Harrington & Abbott products that are filled with only natural fillings.
Who’s it for?
Have this firmly in mind when you head out to the shops. Who the mattress is for will obviously determine the type you’ll need to buy. If it’s for a guest room used once a month it needs to be a decent all-rounder, if for your teenage son or daughter, consider their growing needs and if it’s for you and your partner make sure you’re both happy with it before you buy.
Testing, testing.
You try clothes and shoes on to make sure they fit right and look good, so be sure to do the same when mattress shopping by testing them out. Don’t be afraid to climb onto the display models and spend a good five minutes checking how they feel, and testing different sleep positions on them. If you feel like you’re slouching, then it’s probably too soft, but if you can’t relax properly then it’s likely to be too hard. If you want to buy online think about your current mattress. Is it too firm or too soft? It is always a good idea to buy one of our mattress protectors so you qualify for a 30-night trial!
Always ask.
Even if you have an idea of the type of mattress you want or that would suit you best, the huge variety available can still leave your head spinning. So it’s only natural that you will have questions about the product you’re investing in. If you need help, speak to our sales team and they are able to give you more information about a product you’re interested in. They can advise you on a design that may be better suited to you – don’t be afraid to ask.
