The Sleep Council recommend changing your mattress every 7-8 years. This is because of the build-up of dead skin and sweat making your mattress a lot heavier. It will no longer be as supportive and the mattress loses shape over time which could result in back pain and stop you from sleeping properly
We have 10 top tips to help you care for your mattress!
Mattress Preparation
When you receive your new mattress it’s really important that you ventilate it. Once unwrapped leave it uncovered for a few hours before sleeping on it!
Allow Time to get used to your New Mattress
Your new bed may feel different to your old one, therefore it may take some time for you and your body to adjust to the new comfort and support level.
Filling Settlement
Our mattresses are filled with a variety of luxury filings including cotton, wool, hemp, cashmere & silk. It will take a few weeks for these fillings to completely settle so do not worry if hollows appear in the sleeping areas of your mattress. This is completely normal and by following our turn & rotate advice the fillings will settle to an even level over time. All this is caused by compression under your body weight (it’s quite normal)
Turning & Rotating your Mattress
Your new mattress should be turned and or rotated (if it’s a non-turn) as frequently as possible – preferably every week for the first 12 weeks. After that once a month should be fine unless compression appears. Check out our How to videos to see the best way to Turn & Rotate your mattress.
Mattress Protection
A mattress protector helps to preserve your mattress for longer, protects your guarantee and some also have health benefits.
We provide 4 types of protectors these are Essential, Cotton, Charcoal & Copper. Each protector has its own benefits for example the Charcoal aids in neutralising odours & moisture-wicking benefits to keep you cool & dry. When you purchase one of our protectors with a mattress you get a 30-night trial where if you decide within this time your mattress is not suitable, you can change to an alternative.
Cleaning your Mattress
Cleaning your bed with a soft brush every few months to remove dust and fluff is advised. DO NOT VACUUM YOUR MATTRESS! This can dislodge the fillings. Any spillages should be absorbed with a dry or damp cloth. Only use a mild solution of soap & water. Do not use detergents or chemical cleaners. Read more about Cleaning your mattress here!
Types of Bed Base
It’s really important if you have only purchased a mattress that your base is still in good condition, inside and out. If you have a slatted base we recommend using a base board with your new mattress if the slats are more than 75mm apart. If you are using a divan base you need to consider if it will last another 8-10 years. If the base is damaged in any way it will not be great for your new mattress and can invalidate your guarantee.

Drawers
If your new bed has drawers be careful not to overload them with bulky or heavy items. The weight limit for standard drawers is 5kg.
Sizes
All beds manufactured in the UK are now built using a metric sizing system. If you have a very old bed base it may have been made using the old imperial measurements so there may be some slight size differences. Check out our mattress sizes here.
Life Expectancy
We recommend you replace your mattress every 7-8 years (the same as the Sleep Council). This is due to your body changing and the mattress wearing down over time. Your body requirements are likely to alter and your mattress needs to be changed to account for this. The inside of the mattress is likely to deteriorate and will provide the level of support that it once did when it was originally bought.
A Few Extra Tips!
- Do not fold or roll your mattress (this will damage the internal spring units)
- Never use a plastic sheet or plastic bag on your mattress as this will lead to damage due to condensation.
- Don’t jump on your bed. This will damage the springs and the bed base!
- By washing your bedding every 1-2 weeks you can maximise the longevity of your mattress. This is so you can minimise the dirt and sweat from the bedding getting into the mattress.
Following these guidelines will help to maximize the life of your mattress. At the same time, the hygiene of your bed and your quality of sleep will improve ensuring you wake up fresh and revived for the day ahead.
